Speaking  /  Exclusive speaker, Washington Speakers Bureau

Leadership is the highest calling.

I speak to executive teams, conferences, and universities about how we built a culture of empowered people at Chipotle, and how you can build one wherever people work together. At Chipotle we’d bring 3,500 managers and field leaders together and steep them in all aspects of building cultures of empowerment. My speeches formed the backbone of the lessons there, and people took the information home and eagerly applied it.

The talk

Love Is Free. Guac Is Extra.

How to empower employees and build a connected culture

When I tell the story of what happened at Chipotle, I have to tell a much wider story about what happened to me. I wrestled with insecurities, fear, pain, and heartbreak. What made me most effective as a leader was not my ability to ignore or brush aside these challenges. It was my willingness to embrace them as an essential part of what made me human. The lessons I teach are not taught in business school. Indeed, they are antithetical to most teachings about business leadership.

What I teach
01

“Put simply, where management is about getting people to do something for you, leadership is about getting people to do something for themselves.”

02

“Empowerment means feeling confident in your ability, and encouraged by your circumstances, such that you feel motivated and at liberty to fully devote your talents to a purpose.”

03

“Nothing encourages a team member more than when their leader cares enough to sit down with them, address them one-on-one, and really listen.”
